A discussion session was held to promote freedom of intellectual thought and expression in public spaces, prevent disinformation, and raise awareness about gender equality and sensitivity. The event was jointly organized by Ittefaq Digital and Voices for Interactive Choice and Empowerment.
The session took place on Tuesday (December 31) at 11 AM at the Majida Begum Auditorium of the Ittefaq building. The keynote speech was delivered by Syed Tausif Monowar, an officer of the Collaborative Actions for Promoting Digital and Civic Space and Combating Gender Disinformation program.
Guests included Ahmed Swapan, Executive Director of Voices for Interactive Choice and Empowerment; Musharrat Maheera, Deputy Director; Reza Hafiz, Head of IT at Ittefaq; Abdullah Al-Mamun, Finance and Accounts Manager; Sharafat Hossain, Head of Digital; Rizuana Rinty, Online News Editor; and Imran Haque, Multimedia In-Charge, among others.
Speakers emphasized the need for a public space where people can express their opinions freely, without obstacles. They noted that under the previous government, this fundamental right was undermined in various ways. Criticism against the government often led to legal cases or even attacks. Journalists were also subjected to harassment. They mentioned that with recent political changes, there is now an opportunity to move away from such a restrictive environment. The speakers urged the government to ensure that unjust control is not imposed on public discourse. However, they also stressed that freedom of expression must be exercised with awareness, respecting social norms, existing laws, and religious and ethnic diversity.
They further stated that they would monitor media reports to identify whether anyone is being hindered from expressing their opinions or having their rights violated. Various initiatives are being undertaken to raise awareness about the freedom of the press. Throughout the year, the project will include advocacy and awareness campaigns across print and electronic platforms. At the end of the project, they aim to analyze the overall state of public discourse and provide policy recommendations to help ensure tolerance.
Notably, Ittefaq Digital and Voices for Interactive Choice and Empowerment are jointly working on the public awareness project titled Collaborative Actions for Promoting Digital and Civic Space and Combating Gender Disinformation. The project is funded by the European Union and supported by Free Press Unlimited and Article 19.
